Nordic Travels and Cafe Loki

Post by njm on Sun Oct 18, 2015 12:00 am

As promised, a brief comment on my trip and some photos from Cafe Loki in Reykjavík

Hubby and I spent four weeks of our eight-week holiday in Scandinavia (Copenhagen, Stockholm, Oslo and Bergen) and Iceland. Of course we visited as many Viking/Norse Myth related places as we could, including Viking Ship museums in Roskilde and Oslo, history/national museums in all the cities, the Bírka Viking village/archaeological site near Stockholm, the Saga and Settlement museums in Reykjavík and the Thingvellir National Park (near Reykjavík).

In Iceland we stayed in the street that runs parallel to Lokastígur and so were close to Cafe Loki which we visited five times (four times for coffee/cake and once for dinner). The food there was great and the staff friendly. There is a cool mural on one wall showing different Loki stories such as the birth of Sleipnir and Ragnarök. You can find photos of this online if you search Cafe Loki mural in Google images.

Here are a couple of pictures I took of the cafe, including the Loki beer. The beer was nice, but I loved the Loki tea even more!

Hey Erin
Yes, that is Loki beer. It was a very pleasant amber ale. There was also a Loki tea (herbal) which I loved. They also had Loki ice cream made from rye bread (!) but I didn't get around to trying that one.

Me, too! I'll have to look and see if there's one like it here in the States. If not, then there should be!! XD I wanted to open a tea room a few years ago... Maybe I should! Laughing

I googled "
Loki tea."
This is probably not what they have there, as this refers to thAt Other Loki:

Still kind of cool that Loki tea is a thing, though.

If you google 'cafe loki' you can find photos of their menu in the images. I think the Loki tea is described in them.

I just looked up the menu again. "
Loki tea"
is described as "
Icelandic birch, arctic thyme and Iceland moss"
. I have no idea what that would taste like :p

It's fairly mild... not sure how to describe it... but very pleasant and easy drinking.

From that site, I have this Loki tea: http://www.adagio.com/signature_blend/b ... lend=46547
which is the least Marvel-ish that I could find and quite good with some honey to help bring out the cinnamon.

Once in awhile I say, "
That's IT!! I'm sick of the states! I'm moving to Iceland!"

Rye bread ice cream..... O_O
Sounds like an awesome vacation. Not sure I could handle six months of dark every year though.

Hmm birch huh? That's interesting, when I was writing in the Fireverse, I associated his maternal line (Laufey) with birch trees and portrayed her making healing potions from birch (which is totally a real thing, birch oil is basically aspirin.)

I could see that. I think Her name means "
Leafy Isle"
and Her other name, Nal, means "
Needle,"
so I totally get a trees/greenery association with Her.
As they say, Farbauti "
struck"
Laufey and this "
sparked"
the birth of Loki ... isn't birch associated wth the Berkano rune also? Kind of a motherly, healing thing?

I plan to go to Iceland next year if Trump wins the presidency. And stay there.
I'll request political asylum.
