So this was pretty awesome.

Post by Corannhena on Mon Jul 06, 2015 9:43 pm

Saturday morning at around 4 am I was walking my dog down the street and while I was walking back up to the house, I saw an animal on the opposite side of the road, coming in the opposite direction toward me, and as it got closer I realised--

it was a coyote.

It didn't do anything and didn't even pay attention to me or the dog (although it went down into a nearby driveway), and my dog didn't bark or try to chase it--it was just trotting along down the side of the road. I'd thought I caught a glimpse of another coyote a few nights before, but I couldn't really be sure if it actually was. This one, however, definitely was. And I went back outside after I'd taken the dog in to see if I could see it at all anymore, and I couldn't see that one, but somewhat farther up the road there was something--I couldn't tell what--that I couldn't remember ever having been there before. I thought I saw it moving, but I wasn't sure if it were my imagination, so I walked up to try to get a better look. And then it did move and it was a canid-shaped animal, possibly another coyote but I am not certain. This one had a smaller animal trotting along beside it--a pup, possibly. They both crossed the street and went down a nearby side-road.

I'd grown up hearing coyote yaps and howls pretty much all my life but I'd never actually seen one in the wild before.

That's so cool!
There are coyotes in my state but I've never seen/heard one. We also have an endangered species called the red wolf, which looks similar. Never encountered one of those, either.
I have seen/heard foxes on occasion. There was a little one in my yard one night that scared the shit out of me when I was going to take the garbage cart to the street. All I heard was a weird yipping sound, and you should've seen me haul ass inside! lol It was probably just as scared of me. I looked up the sound online and found the pawprints later, which confirmed it was a fox. I think. Maybe I should've looked up coyote sounds ... whatever it was was pretty small based on the little prints. I never actually *saw* it, just heard it.

Anyway though, coyotes, yeah! It seems us American folk are starting to equate them with Loki. I've started reading "
Trickster Makes This World"
which I think discusses Coyote a lot.

I read that the FWC is lifting protection on red wolves even though they still need it. It's sad. Florida is doing the same thing with the Florida panther. No, no, no.
I'd love to see a fox or coyote. <

Yeah, we live in the suburbs, but there's a pretty large foresty area nearby, and I think that's where they all live. If an emergency vehicle with a siren is in the vicinity they'll all start yipping and yowling in response to it :p

When I was!in Kansas I saw a coyote run across the apt. grounds in the middle of the night.
I also had a red fox follow me up the street at night during a night walk. I was on the sidewalk and he kept a distance running through parking lots, bushes, etc. We both stopped and it looked like he was coming toward me but he just watched me from behind a shrub while I!tried to look nonchalant, lol. He trotted along that way and then split ways and ran north when he reached amfield.

I think we have foxes in Oregon, but they're REALLY elusive. I've never seen one (and I've seen plenty of our other mammalian wildlife). They might also live mostly in the eastern part of the state.

I'm not sure, but foxes seem pretty shy. I can count on one hand the times I have seen one in the wild (which wasn't roadkill). I've seen possums and raccoons more often than a fox.
People actually get concerned about seeing them in neighborhoods around here due to the threat of rabies. So I guess that means it's unusual to encounter a normal, healthy one.

When we spot reclusive wildlife in the city or suburbs, it's probably a good indicator that we're encroaching too heavily on their habitats.

Yep. And it breaks my heart when I see those that didn't make it across the road. Sad
