Has anyone ever...

Post by Corannhena on Wed May 20, 2015 3:17 am

... gone for years thinking you've never seen a particular thing and then it turns out you saw that thing literally every day but didn't realise it?

I live in Oregon and always thought there were no giant sequoias here, they were all in California, so I'd never seen one (and if I had it was briefly, or when I was very young). I've lived in our current house for a little less than nine years and there's a huge tree in our front yard that's in the process of being cut down (they started today but have to finish tomorrow). I'd always thought that particular tree was a red cedar. Guess what species the tree-cutting dude told my mom it actually was. No, go on, guess. :p (No prizes.)

TBF that tree doesn't/didn't look ANYTHING like the pics of giant sequoias I've seen;
it was more conical/Christmas-tree shaped. I think that's what threw me.

The good thing about it is that when it does, I'll finally be able to sun- or moon-charge my shiny rocks in the front yard, since the tree won't be blocking the light from either of those any more. I think they're even going to leave the stump, which will be a convenient "
table"
for the stones.

Plus--more sky visible over the front yard means I (hopefully, anyway) won't have to walk down the street for a decent view of the stars, either (although there are still streetlights nearby, grumble grumble).

Hm... I don't know how I'd be able to get it to you? I don't drive and the bus doesn't go near the closest post office (plus I only have one bus ticket left and I don't want to use it up) :/ and if I were to ask my mom she'd be like "
... why do you want to mail someone a branch?"
and it would require Things I Am Not Comfortable Explaining.

(That being said, there are friggin' TONS of sticks in the yard rn [I had the thought of picking one up for myself], but hardly any actual branches with the needles and stuff, if that's what you were looking for. Plus the needles are super-prickly anyway :/ )

Sticks were pretty much what I was thinking. Any little bits, ya know. You could say you're sending them to someone wanting them for an art project? :;

If I know my mom--and I'm fairly certain I do--there's approximately a 96% chance she'll be like "
Why can't she just get her own sticks?"
and I'm not sure I'd be able to explain why you want the sequoia specifically. I'm not certain if there are any small sticks left--they may have already cleaned them up. I was out there earlier but they're still working so I didn't get to get very close, but I didn't see any from where I was watching. There's a bunch of giant trunk pieces, though :p but those would be really hard to mail :p I'll probably go out later and look for sticks, though. What size were you thinking, like how many inches in length &
diameter? I might be able to save one for you (again, if there are any still out there), although I won't be able to get it to you right away, it might be a few months at best.

I did take a few pics and an approximately 1-minute vid of the cutting process earlier, I might post them later.

edit: well, it's kinda bad quality (I recorded it with my 3DS) but uh here's the video anyway: https://youtu.be/lAwfiYohRXU At this point all the branches had been stripped and they were about halfway done with the trunk. The remaining trunk is now short enough so it can just be felled, but idk if I'll be able to get that on video.

edit again: Okay, I went out about an hour or so ago and searched and OH MY GODS you would not believe the trouble I had finding sticks that weren't: too long, too short, too thick, too narrow, too bent/crooked or too prickly (there were A LOT of prickly ones), or any combo of the above. Finally found three smooth(ish), mostly-straight sticks, one of which I'm keeping for myself (that one is kind of wavy-crooked actually, I like the way it looks), but the other two are approximately 16"
long and one is about 1/2"
diameter and the other is about 3/4"
diameter. (The thinner one does have some prickles near one end though, and the thicker one is curved slightly.) Would either of those work?

(I'm trying to decide if I should pick/peel the bark off my stick or if I should leave it on... :/ )

Ooh, those sound beautiful! I personally love leaving things in a natural state. I'd probably leave the bark on. But that's just my taste. Smile
Thank you. ♥

Sheesh. I'm gonna have to take a pic of the yard later (it's getting dark rn). They've finally finished cutting it down (although they might still cut some of the stump*, I'm not sure--it looks like it's going to be cut some more judging by the chainsaw notch near the bottom of it), and while they actually have cleaned up the sticks/twigs now (I suppose I was lucky to get the three I did), basically the entire yard is full of sectioned trunk pieces :/ Also it is COVERED in sawdust. Like. The entire yard, basically. :p (Also--some of the sawdust is pink, from the core of the tree.)

*I'm not sure if I'll be able to use the stump as an outdoor table after all. There's one section that's higher than the rest of the stump, which is flat, but again I have the feeling they're going to cut that part off, and I don't know if the remaining piece will still be flat. The lower part is angled at about 45 degrees or so, so I can't put anything on that section. :/

Hmm... well, maybe use it as like a terraced, multi-level surface if they dont even it up? I also read that it might sprout back again. If the roots remain living, it finds a way to survive. King of the trees, indeed. ♥
