Polytheism

Post by Darkamber on Fri May 15, 2015 2:46 am

"
Polytheism, true polytheism as practised by the ancient peoples of our planet, is the belief in many gods...not one god called by many names, not "
God"
under many guises...but many distinct deities, each with their own physical and spiritual manifestations and spheres of influence."
--Ptahmassu Nofra-Uu'a.

I agree with this quote. I'm a hard polytheist, and I believe that the gods are all separate, distinct Persons/Powers with Their own personalities, agendas, likes and dislikes.

What is your opinion on this?

I have to say I lean towards this also.
I never felt comfortable with the idea of "
goddess of 10,000 names"
-type concepts, nor did I ever truly grasp the monolatry of the House of Netjer (the Many springing from the One).
Now that I've been looking outside Kemetic Orthodoxy, I see a trend of people worshipping from different pantheons, or corroborated-gnosis of various deities co-exisitng, working together, disliking each other, etc.
Of course, even within KO we respected gods of other cultures, and didn't think Kali was the Hindu version of Sekhmet, or that Isis and Aset are the same goddess.
I don't want to call KO a "
closed group,"
but it's just amazing to me the things I have discovered since looking outside that sphere - godspousery, interacting pantheons, etc.

I'm also a hard polytheist, so I agree with the quote. That's what made me a bit uncomfortable when I was studying Wicca to be honest. Went looking into Norse stuff and haven't looked back since.

At one point I would have said that the gods were archetypes but that archetypes were, in themselves, separate beings with their own personalities. I would have subscribed to the idea that Odin is the Norse Zeus, Loki is Hermes or other trickster gods.

It's becoming a godspouse that's really helped me see just how personal the gods are.

I agree, too. They're not one deity with different names, They're not archetypes. Each is Their own.

I still believe there are archetypes that are actually more powerful than the gods but I also believe that they are not self aware. They're just make up the biggest part of this brainless boob called the universe.

Both tell it like it is, lol!

Hey! Anyone else remember that movie, The Blob? That was the scariest movie when I was little. I was like 4 years old the first time I saw it and it terrified me half to death. But every time it came on I had to see it because my big brother talked me into it. And he was my big brother. Smile
