The Ragnarök Chronicles

Post by njm on Tue Feb 10, 2015 6:30 pm

For those who don't know, I became Lokean during the course of writing a novel last year. I had read all the Norse myths at university (I wrote my dissertation on Tolkien) and Loki had always stood out to me, but I'd never been particularly religious and it went no further. Then I saw the Marvel films (I came to them late after discovering TWH in The Hollow Crown) and was reminded of Loki again, and I decided to revisit the myths. It was while rereading that I had the idea for my novel, The Ragnarök Chronicles. It was originally envisioned as a trilogy, but it was a tough sell to publishers (didn't fit nicely into their word count/genre categories), so in the end I decided to self-publish as a single volume of all three books.

While I was writing, I really felt Loki with me, and I began to look more closely at the lore, and at heathenism... and thus it happened. I consider this book Loki's as much as it is mine. This book (more than anything else I've written) is like my baby - so I guess it's mine and Loki's baby! lol Loki was a huge creative influence on me as I wrote this novel, and he continues to be so now), and I have dedicated the book to him. Naturally he plays a major role in the story, and though he starts off as an ambiguous character, he is the anti-hero of the piece. The story is set in modern times, but there are many references back to the original myths and many other gods and giants from the tales put in an appearance.

The writing of this book was my stepping stone to Loki, so I wanted to share some stuff about it with you all. I don't want to spam you all with promotion, so I will limit it to this thread. But I thought I would share some links with you as we get closer to release day. I honestly can't tell you how excited I am that the book is nearly out. I hope those who read it will enjoy my portrayal of Loki. I totally fell in love with him after all! Smile

Anyhow, official publication date is 2 March 2015, so I will share some other links with you then. In the meantime, I am doing a cover reveal on Facebook on 1 March 2015, and you are all most welcome to come along (it's an open event): https://www.facebook.com/events/1548269432125231/

I am thrilled to announce that my Norse myth-inspired fantasy novel, The Ragnarök Chronicles, is now available in both e-book and print formats! This story has truly been a labour of love—It brought me to Loki after all!—and I am so excited to finally be able to share it.

Naturally our dear trickster plays a major role in the story, and for those of you who dislike seeing him cast as the villain in tales, I can promise that’s not the case in this book! :;
): If any of you do read it, I’d love to hear what you think. And if any of you have any questions about the novel, feel free to ask!

Without further ado, here is the blurb and information:

The Ragnarök Chronicles
by Nicki J Markus

For Ragnarök will be completed....

Nothing marks Cassandra out—except her visions. She’s only ever seen small, insignificant things. That is until the strange frost arrives.

With her normal life turned upside down, Cassandra is plunged into an extraordinary and terrifying world of Norse gods and rampaging giants, ancient feuds and broken prophecies.

A handsome stranger offers aid. But can Cassandra really trust him? More importantly, can she trust her own judgement when his slightest touch sets her heart and her body aflame?

Thanks Lokakisa. I'm so thrilled you are enjoying it!
Even if I never break even on how much it cost me to publish it, I'll be happy as long as a few people find some enjoyment in it. I wrote it for Loki.

Just finished yesterday. Loved it, loved it, loved it!
That offering ritual, is it something historical? Did Loki suggest it? Do you try it yourself? Would it not be too spoiler-y to post the ritual in the Heathenism section for quick reference?
I should've wrote it down ... I got the ebook version so it's not as easy to flip through pages to find things again.

Ah, I debated messaging her privately about it ... if it's better to answer me that way, I don't mind.
I was trying not to say too much.

Well, it would be interesting to know, but if it's going to really spoil, then I won't read the post until after I've read past that part. Smile

Re: The Ragnarök Chronicles

Post by njm on Mon Apr 13, 2015 8:11 pm

Hi Guys

No, nothing historical in the ritual &
wording I used in the book. It's just what came to me. I wanted something quick and simple for Cassandra to say/do. I do sometimes use similar wording myself.
As to spoilers, I don't think it's a spoiler if you are just referring to the standard mead offering Cassandra makes, maybe it would be if you mean the one she makes toward the end of book two, though.
Happy for you to put it in another topic if you want.

Oh, and thanks so much, Lokakisa. I'm so very happy to hear you enjoyed the story! Smile

Re: The Ragnarök Chronicles

Post by Lokakisa on Tue Apr 14, 2015 11:44 am

Just the standard one, apologies for being unclear but I was trying not to ruin it for anyone.
I don't drink alcoholic beverages but I don't see why the basic idea can't be applied to pretty much anything. I just couldn't remember the wording. (there were, uh, many other distractions ... lol)
It's my understanding that Loki is not big on formalities but reading the book made me think that we could whip up some simple things to do/say, those times when we want to be more formal or something.
