Re: Hel

Post by shadytrashvoid on Wed Apr 08, 2015 6:07 am

Tonight I prayed to Hel to let my dog die peacefully and without pain. We were on the way to the vets and I knew what was coming. I really just wanted her to be able to die without being in pain or fear. I prayed all the way to the vets. Asking Hel to take her quickly.

Once my family made the decision to have her put down I decided to stay with her to the end. She was sedated first and fell asleep with her head in my mum's hands. After that my parents left and I held her while the vet administered the serum. After only 1.5ml (a normal dose for a bird) she twitched and laid still. The vet said he had to re-site the needle because her vein burst but after checking her pulse said that she had passed. He was very surprised because the dose wasn't high enough for a border collie.

I'm so thankful to Hel that it was quick and painless. She was so much calmer than she usually is at the vets. Normally she's panicking and trying to escape but this time she didn't seem afraid at all.

I'd love to be able to do something for Hel. Give a food offering or some sort of service offering.

Does anyone have experience with Her?

I am so sorry... I've been there more times than I've wanted to be these last few years. It hurts and I feel for you.
I haven't met Hel yet, but I ordered a devotional candle for Her from Fiberwytch on etsy. And I have a bracelet for Her. I'll have a poke around re: special offerings for Her and see if I can find something for you. I just had a thought, though... maybe something you've made, written, or drawn? Light a special candle and read a poem? Sing a song?

I have met Hel a few times both in dreams and trance visions. She's a very straightforward goddess. She can be blunt, but honest.

I have made offerings of a necklace with skull beads, and a crystal skull to Her. I've also lit candles for Her.
I've heard She likes tea. I think she would like dark red roses.

I'm sorry about your dog, this is always hard. I have great respect and admiration for Hel, as for all Loki's children.
I heard Hel likes dry flowers, or to let them on altar to dry. I'm not sure which one it is now, maybe both.

So sorry for your loss, ive been there many times. Something i did for my cat of 17yrs when he passed is i made a memorial page on critters.com &
i go &
write on his page. I have found in my devotions to Hela that She is straightforward, very compassionate &
has a fondness for white flowers &
raisins.

Thanks guys.

I love the flowers and tea idea. I may set up a space for her and offer both.

Now I just need to find the space among all the other altars Laughing

I am a huge sucker for anything Halloween-related. Do you think Hel would mind Day of the Dead imagery? (especially the female figures)
I also tend to think of Santa Muerte from Mexican folk belief. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Santa_Muerte
I am still having trouble connecting to Norse lore and imagery, I think. Other than Marvel comics, that is not something I was really exposed to around here so I find that I try to connect through more familiar things while I catch up on the Northlands history.

My shrine to Hel is primarily day of the dead imagery, sugar skulls, and a large Catrina statue in the centre. I celebrate Dia De Muertos and honor Hela with it. Making the mini matchbox/shoebox altars to honor your dead, things like that.

Cool, I didn't think that would be too far off. Not that I'm an expert on celebrations of the dead around the world, but honestly they seem to all be pretty similar.
I had to look up "
Catrina,"
but yeah that is exactly what I was thinking of. Or La Muerte from the "
Book of Life"
movie.
I don't know if there is a Hel festival or a Norse equivalent to Halloween/Dia de los Muertos, but that seems like a pretty good time to connect with Her.

Look! Isn't this adorable? Funko La Muerte http://amzn.com/B00MWDMJ5W

Love that funko de muerte! I need one!!!! The closest Norse thing I could tie into towards a time for Hel is "
Winter Nights"
which is celebrated for a few days around mid-October (Oct 11th-18th give or take) and there wasn't much to find in that as is. So I went with my intuition, and I start setting up my ancestral altar/dia de muertos shrines around mid Oct, and I will leave them up till Nov 2nd. During that time I'll visit the cemetaries, sweep and dust off the headstones, change the flowers and so forth. Any offerings to Her go outside to Her spot in my garden to decay or be eaten by wildlife. There is a beauty in the decay. I say go with your intuition, and put together something that works for you! Good luck and thanks for the funko link! I'll be acquiring one asap!!! Smile

On the Day of the Dead note - Every Samhain and Beltane, my circle throws a weekend away at a local girl guides campsite. This Samhain weekend away (this weekend, in fact) we're having a Day of the Dead theme, and I'm basing my costume on Hel/Hela.

So, Hela showed up earlier for the first time (I think) tonight. Since she's new, I didn't recognise her energy (to me it feels kinda prickly? and a bit cold) so I had to try to guess who she was. When I did, I asked her if she wanted to be "invited in" as well, and she said yes, so I did. So now I've invited in Fenrir and Hela, I'm kinda wondering if Jormy's gonna show up... :p

Strange how I haven't sensed any new presences. My life has been rather chaotic this past year I probably wouldn't recognize a newcomer, lol.

Mine is getting turned on end as well. The last "new" Person I met was Sif. But these past couple of months, I can't tell Who is around me. I can tell when Someone is here, but Everyone now 'feels' the same to me.

Hey that's neat to meet Hela!

Since we're already starting to sidetrack with Who's new in our lives (and I didn't know where else to put it), I've decided to start working with Lilith. Or maybe She decided it was time. ;p
